These new Kohler engines are junk
For many years I have owned many mowers with Kohler engines on them and have seen the quality of these motors go from great to terrible with each year that passes. My most recent purchase was in 2012 when I bought an Ex-Mark mower with a 38hp Kohler.
I don't use it as much as most commercial mowers and only have 384 hours on it. It recently started leaking oil pretty badly so I had to take it to the dealer and was told, sorry you're out of warranty. My bill was nearly $400 and recieved no help from Kohler.
This is totally unacceptable to me and should be to others.I have another Kohler on a 1995 Dixie Chopper that is still running strong with no problems. I highly recommend anyone buying a commercial mower to STAY AWAY FROM KOHLER.

Spent countless hours researching to see if there even WAS a durable engine left on the market. The Good news is that there still is one, but you'll have to pay approx.
$200 more on your next mower purchase to get it.. Its Kawasacki and owner reviews attest that it IS a truly good engine where Briggs and Kohler fail to deliver on former quality. I highly recommend the use of a synthetic oil that is a bit expensive but well worth protection it gives to small engines.
Its name is Amsoil and comes in several different viscosities. Hopes this info will help prospective buyers before they invest in a high ticket item like a riding mower.
